Assessments

As a primary care physician in the province of BC, I use a number of comprehensive conventional and alternative methods to diagnose medical conditions and disease. These diagnostic methods may include the following:

  • Thorough health history – A detailed investigation of your existing concerns, family history, past medical history, medications, and lifestyle.

  • Physical Exam – An investigation of the heart, lungs, abdomen, nervous system, head and neck, hair, skin and nails, and musculoskeletal system. An additional focus on woman’s health could include a breast exam and full gynecological exam with PAP test.

  • Lifelabs laboratory testing – Standard blood and urine tests may be required for appropriate assessment, diagnosis and treatment. These may be done through your medical doctor, or may be requisitioned during your visit.

  • Advanced laboratory testing  – Occasionally more comprehensive testing is required, such as Dutch Comprehensive Hormone testing, Comprehensive Stool Analysis and GI Map, Organic Acids Testing, Heavy Metal testing, SIBO testing, Food Sensitivity testing, Micronutrient testing, and many others.

  • Previous medical reports and diagnostic testing – All test results (previous blood work, MRIs, X-rays, colonoscopy results, etc) are valuable tools used to assess your health concerns. Please ask for and retain copies of these test results.

  • Nutritional analysis – Evaluating eating habits, diet, and nutritional status to assess the impact your diet is having on your health.

Treatment Plans May Include:

Botanical Medicine

Medicinal plants have both a long history treating many diseases, as well as modern clinical studies supporting their use. As part of your treatment protocol, a custom blend tincture may be prepared, or professional-grade herbal extracts recommended, based on your unique situation. Naturopathic physicians are the only health care provider licensed to use botanical medicine, and are able to recognize when they are advisable, how they interact with pharmaceuticals, and how to prescribe them safely and effectively.

Nutrition

Nutrition is the foundation of good health. On a daily basis, what you consume has the ability to influence many areas of functioning, from healing digestive disturbances to worsening the pain of arthritis to affecting your hormone balance. Nutritional deficiencies or excesses, food allergies or intolerances, and other dietary imbalances can be associated with a wide variety of health concerns. After a nutritional analysis, a therapeutic diet or professional-grade nutrients, vitamins or minerals may be prescribed, in order to help your body function optimally. You will be taught how food is affecting your health, and will be given dietary strategies to meet your needs.

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

IMS is a technique used to effectively treat chronic pain. During a physical exam, shortened muscles and oversensitive nerves that are involved in the chronic pain pattern are identified.  IMS seems very similar to acupuncture, but it is based on an understanding of neurophysiology and anatomy, not energetics. Fine needles are inserted into the shortened muscles, they briefly spasm and then reflexively relax (and therefore lengthen).  The treatment also brings more blood and healing cells to the area and changes the electrical potential in the muscle, restoring proper function to the previously supersensitive nerves.

Shortened muscles can also pull on tendons and cause inflammation (tendonitis) and irritate the joints that they move. Conditions that typically respond to IMS are:

  • Back pain (upper, lower and neck)

  • Tendonitis

  • Frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Piriformis syndrome, ischial bursitis, patellofemoral syndrome

  • Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis

  • Myofascial pain and fibromyalgia

  • Headaches and TMJ

Prescription Medication and Hormones

In the fall of 2010, naturopathic doctors in BC were granted prescribing authority.  This provided access to a wide range of therapeutics previously limited by prescription (this includes hormones, certain herbs, amino acids and high dose vitamins). While prescribing medication is often seen as a last resort, there are many instances where it is appropriate and necessary. In addition, for patients seeking to come off their current medication, it allows a safe tapering to occur while transitioning to alternative treatments.  For patients with hormonal imbalances, prescribing rights have enabled NDs to use safer and more effective hormone therapies that are customized to the patient's needs. Dr. Komonski has extensive training in bio-identical hormone therapy prescribing.

Intravenous Nutrient Therapy

Using nutrients intravenously allows us to bypass the digestive tract and get higher levels of vitamins and minerals directly to the cells that need them.  IV therapy can be used as an adjunctive treatment to conventional therapies (when appropriate), to replenish depleted vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and to proactively maintain health.  Custom formulas containing vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other compounds are made just prior to appointments.  Many conditions can benefit from IV therapy, please arrange a 15-min info session to inquire if it might be right for you.

Lifestyle Counseling & Mind-Body Medicine

Your mental outlook and emotions are important, though often overlooked, elements in health and disease. As part of addressing the whole person, your mental-emotional health is taken into consideration. A very important part of most treatment plans includes stress management. Almost every system in your body can be damaged by chronic stress, and it is very important to identify and address the areas in your life causing tension. The importance of exercise to health cannot be overstated. Individualized exercise programs can benefit any health condition and will benefit digestion, circulation, immunity, mood, sleep, memory, energy levels, etc, etc! As well, the impact of lifestyle choices, occupational and/or environmental hazards are addressed as part of the treatment program.

Medical Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy

When mentioned in conversation, the topic of hypnosis can give rise to many different reactions and opinions.  From stage hypnosis to past-life regression, it is not uncommon to hear of this technique being used for entertainment purposes.  However, the applications of hypnosis in a medical setting are extensive, and as the research indicates, very effective.

Hypnosis can be defined as an altered state of mind that bypasses the critical conscious mind and allows direct access to the subconscious. The mind is focused, calm, clear and alert and the body is in a state of deep physical relaxation.  In this state it is possible to shift long-held beliefs, conditioned behaviours, perceptions, reactions and thoughts that are no longer promoting wellbeing.

In the clinical setting, it can be used in many different ways depending on the client’s goals. The following conditions and concerns can benefit from hypnosis:

  • Chronic pain (headaches, neuralgia, cancer pain, rheumatic pain, fibromyalgia)

  • Anxiety disorders including panic attacks, social anxiety, performance anxiety

  • Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, grief

  • Low self-esteem/confidence/motivation

  • Stress management

  • Fears and phobias

  • Smoking cessation & addictions (drug/food/behaviour)

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Insomnia

  • Weight loss

  • Digestive conditions (IBS, GERD, dyspepsia, nausea, food sensitivities)

  • Preparation for surgery or labour

  • To lessen side effects of chemotherapy

  • Family and relationship issues
